Awesome Ways to Make Money in College Without a Regular Job
Making money while in college is something that most students have to do. Whether it’s to help compensate for tuition, or just to provide extra spending cash, earning and learning often take place simultaneously.
But should you jump on the first job that comes along? Is your time really worth minimum wage if it means doing something miserable?
My answer is, “No”.
Never take on a job unless it is at least one (but preferably all) of the following:
In other words: don’t take the telemarketing job for that sleazy “hair growth” formula company. If you need money, there are many ways to get it without being miserable. Let me share with you some of the best.
1. Start a Blog
Starting a blog is a necessity for a college student today. While you can make some money off of it, the more important benefit is the portfolio that it provides you with. If you wrote one article a week about your desired job field, during your entire college experience, you would graduate with 200 articles! That is something worth putting on a resume (or just emailing to people).
Will you make tons of money off of a blog? That depends on you. Initially, no. But, if you spend a lot of time and pursue an objective (like my 5000 daily page views goal), you can earn a lot from blogging. Maybe you will graduate and decide that you don’t want a real job!
This is similar to blogging, but for people with gregarious personalities who don’t mind being viewed by thousands (or millions). In fact, if you want to get into any kind of acting, performing, or public speaking, this is probably a necessity. A YouTube channel allows you to earn from advertisements, and popular channels make hundred or thousands of dollars a month.
Again, this is something that takes time, but it can be a fun way to earn while in college.
Do you have a talent for writing? A great way to make money relatively quickly (and a decent amount) is by writing for other people’s blogs and websites. I started this at the end of my college experience, and I wish I had done it sooner! Fiverr.com is a good place to get started – you can sell articles and make $4 for each one. If you would like to start earning a bit more, you can find some great gigs on Odesk that will pay you $10-$25 per article. However, for these articles you will be expected to provide an even higher quality.
The great think about writing is that you can do it whenever you want, and however much you want. In other words, during finals week you don’t write any, but over the breaks you can bring in a lot of doe.
See nilsevenson for a great example of a college student who makes money writing articles for others.
Do you know that there are a lot of businesses struggling to keep up with their regular work and the need to be active online? If you have a talent for setting up social networking accounts, love posting on Pinterest, and enjoy sharing popular news, then setting up several gigs on Fiverr (or looking for work on Odesk) may help you earn some decent cash – just socializing.
You could be like dinibieni, making money helping people plan and develop their social media presence.
5. Design Logos, Websites, and Ads
If you study graphic design, then you can make your coursework a way to make money. Offer to design logos for people on Fiverr and make money while building your portfolio.
There are many opportunities to create logos on Fiverr – like Creativeinarts.
Would you consider yourself attractive? Do guys (or ladies) get distracted and run into walls when you walk by? Then consider making some side income as a model. And no, you don’t need to go to LA for this. In fact, you can do it from the comfort of your own home! Businesses need people to model their clothing and hold their signs – and you can get paid to do this! Once you develop a bit of a reputation, you may even get free clothing that you can keep after modeling it.
For an example of how you could make money online modeling (or to hire a talented model) check out foxmakeba on Fiverr.
If you are an artist, then you can make a fortune drawing. That’s right, people used to tell you that artists were always starving – not anymore. Whatever style of art you do, you can draw people, places, and things for others, and they will pay you for it. On Fiverr you can start out selling a head sketch for $5, and then charge $50 for coloring, a full body sketch, etc. It’s really not as hard as you might think! If you are an artist, you can make money with your talents.
Neilgershon is an artist who makes money turning people into cartoons. Maybe you’ll want to follow in his footsteps.
8. Design Power Point Presentations
A lot of businesses (and probably some students) need help with professional presentations. If you are an expert at laying out slides, pictures, and bullet points, you should consider offering your services online. Make significantly more money by offering rush services.
What?! You can make money being “really, really, really ridiculously good looking” – even if you aren’t Zoolander? That’s right. If you don’t mind sending a few texts, Facebook messages, or tweets to someone who is having a rough time socially, there are people that will pay you for that. Of course, you best be careful – they may expect a real relationship later on.
Check out pinkadventures – who has made over $400 flirting on Facebook! Not too shabby of a deal.
You’ve probably thought about teaching music lessons locally, but have you thought about teaching all around the world using Skype? Sometimes a few minutes with a professional can really help a beginner improve. Give someone 15 minutes of your time on Skype, and they may be willing to give you an extra $5.
One talented guitarist who offers lessons on Fiverr is uri_avi.
You can do the same thing with languages that you can do with music – teach people via Skype. But what if you don’t know any language besides for English? You are in luck! There are more people wanting to learn English than any other language! If you make up a few little lesson plans (or simply offer conversation), you can earn from you mono-language skills.
Check out Pedro939Ferreir – a new Portuguese teacher on Fiverr.
High schools, colleges, and cities around the world are filled with young men trying to woo young women. They are hopeless romantics looking for a way to share their undying love for the lady they met 2 months ago. If you are a singer, songwriter, or musician of any other sort, you can help these poor love-birds by putting their words (or thoughts) to music. Even a simply happy birthday song can make you a lot of money!
Follow in the footsteps of ZackDavidMusic and make a name for yourself singing!
13. Do Voice Impersonations
For those talented enough to sound like a celebrity, someone out there would love to have you do a voiceover, or prank call a friend. Create a video with you sounding just like that famous “whoever”, and you may be speaking your way to riches in no time.
Yes, men and women both are desperate for tips on how to look more attractive. That’s why there is such a big fashion industry in the first place. If you know style, hair, make-up, etc., offering help to those less “style savvy” can become a lucrative part-time (or full-time) job. And don’t focus only on your gender – much of what the opposite gender does is to look good for you anyway – so help them out!
Carlymaddox has been making a bit of money having fun and helping people develop their own sense of fashion.
15. Edit Photos with Photoshop
As the world goes digital, there are a lot of old family photos being uploaded to the internet. Many of these, however, need a bit of touching up. If you have Photoshop skills, you can make money touching up pictures, adding mustaches, and cropping people in/out of pictures. It’s a bit of a fun way to develop your skills while making money.
16. Give Relationship Advice
Are you so smooth that Brad Pitt gets his moves from you? Well, let’s not go that far… However, people everywhere are trying to find love. If you know how to woo, charm, and impress people, then becoming the next “Hitch” is not impossible. Even at $5 at a time on Fiverr.
17. Go Crazy on Camera
If you like running into walls, jumping out of cars, rolling in the mud, or dressing like a superhero, then someone, for some reason, wants to PAY YOU to do that while saying their message or holding their logo. Why? I don’t know – but you may as well take advantage of this opportunity.
SimonBeyond is one of these geniuses – he will post your logo on a wall. It’s actually a very cool idea!
Scentsy Wickless candle warmers have over 80 scents to choose from. Scentsy provides a great opportunity to make some extra cash…perfect for college students with a knack for creativity and sales.

If You Build It, They Will Come
You’re here, aren’t you? Since leaving my PhD program and starting this blog a week ago, I’ve been working like a mad man to publish as much content as possible – and apparently it has gotten you interested in my blog! So thank you (and hard work pays off).
Yesterday we discussed the importance of high quality content. But what’s equally important is publishing frequently and consistently.
There are three reasons why it’s a good idea to post regularly:
How Often Should I Post Content on My Blog?
After scouring the web and speaking with people I know, I have come up with several different answers – and I believe a lot of it depends on much you want to get out of your website.
One successful blogger told me that, if you post one article a day for a year you will start making a decent amount of money (after 2 years he made $4000 in his best month). Another blogger suggests that, if you post two articles a day for 6 months you will make $1000 a month.
Of course, social networking, quality of the content, and your passion for the subject will influence you as well, but consistency is one of the greatest keys to success. No one makes it big being spastic.
Tips for Publishing Blog Posts Regularly
Writing two articles a day is a lot of work! Even writing one article a day can be exhausting. How can someone maintain this level of consistency?
Here are a few suggestions:
1. Set a time and place to write
The greatest writers throughout history have had writing routines. Select at time that works well for you, and schedule writing in like you would with work. You wouldn’t skip out on work to watch a television show – don’t skip out on writing to do.
2. Don’t go to bed until you finish
This is an easy way to make sure that you write. One business academic told me that he writes for 2 hours every day – no matter what. If he gets home at 11 pm and realizes that he hasn’t written yet, he sits up and writes until 1 am.
3. Use the Seinfeld Strategy
Most comedians develop their own jokes, and that’s what the famous Seinfeld had to do. To keep himself motivated, he bought a huge wall calendar that covered the entire year – and he would place a big red X on every day that he wrote. Seinfeld said that, after seeing several X’s in a row, he wouldn’t want to break the chain. So start marking the days that you write and don’t let yourself break the chain.
4. Reward yourself for accomplishments
Is there something small that you would enjoy doing after a week or two of hard work? Give yourself small goals with rewards. Go out to ice cream after writing for 5 days, or take a vacation after 3 months of hard writing.
5. Build up a reserve of articles
Of course, there may be times when you absolutely cannot write. Whether it’s a busy day, a serious life event, etc. To prepare for such occurrences, build up a reserve of articles that you can publish when you aren’t able to write. This way, you can keep the conversation going.
6. Make the most of scheduled posts
If you use WordPress, you can schedule posts to publish at a later time. Make the most of this if you will be away from the internet for several days – allowing your readers to keep getting daily updates.
7. Don’t let a down day become a down week
After breaking a new year’s resolution, most people just give up completely – which defeats the entire purpose behind the resolution! When we do (or don’t do) something once, it’s easy to completely break our good habit. Don’t let one down day ruin all of your progress.
8. Take a day off every week
I make sure to rest for a day every week. It’s important to take time to rest, rejuvenate, and remember that writing isn’t everything. Life is about people, places, and adventures – makes sure that you are able to enjoy all of those meaningful aspects of life.
My goal is to publish two articles a day, six days a week. I’m confident that this, along with some great promotional efforts, should be able to help me attract a significant following. And at this point, I’m still banking on that 5,000 daily visitors. We’ll see what happens!
How about you? What do you do to motivate yourself to write?
*** I have committed to taking one day off a week (to rest my hands and improve my relationships). Recognize that I will not be publishing tomorrow, but the fun will continue again on Sunday!
